Overtones, a play in three acts
by Alice Gerstenberg and Lorin Howard

Set in the late Victorian era and inspired by Freud’s theories, Overtones, a play in three acts is a three-act play about male and female relationships and the roles that social conventions, fear of intimacy, and rejection play in those interactions. The author's uses the novel idea of separate actors to portray the alter egos of the main characters. Join Harriet and her inner self Hetty as they test every social boundary to regain the affection of her first love John, a painter, much to the dismay of his inner self Jack. When Harriet abandoned John to marry William for money; John settled for a marriage to his childhood friend, Margaret. Now Margaret and John are struggling to survive on the limited funds of an artist, while Harriet and William live in the lap of luxury. Their worlds collide at a chance encounter and with the commissioning of a portrait their lives and relationships are forever changed.
