Dates From Saturday, March 28 2009, 8:00 PM
To Saturday, March 28 2009, 10:00 PM
When the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra was born in the spring of 1934 at Nuttings-On-The Charles in Waltham, Massachusetts, it seemed that Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey were on the scene to stay. After just over a year, however, it became apparent that this was not to be. In early June 1935, at the Glen Island Casino, Jimmy and Tommy had an argument over the tempo of a tune and Tommy walked off the bandstand. Suddenly Jimmy was the leader.

Jimmy Dorsey was considered one of the finest Clarinet and Alto Saxophone players of his day and was always playing solos that simply amazed his fellow musicians and audiences. It turned out that he was also an excellent band leader, and for eighteen years after Tommy departed the band, the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra had many hits. Jimmy's greatest hit, and the last instrumental hit by any artist, was "So Rare," for which he earned a gold record two days before his death, on June 12, 1957.

The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra continued for the next 33 years under the leadership of the great trumpeter Lee Castle. Upon Lee's death, the baton passed for a decade to Jim Miller, carrying the group into the 21st century. The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra is now under the direction of trombonist Bill Tole.

When The Pied Pipers, Frank Sinatra, and The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra got together in the early 40s, they became the most formidable group of the Big Band Era. The Pied Pipers officially joined Dorsey in January 1940, just before Sinatra. Both Sinatra and the Pied Pipers made their recording debut with the Dorsey Orchestra on February 1, 1940 and were an instant success with the recording of "I'll never Smile Again". This memorable song was the very first hit for Frank and the Pipers. Many more hits followed including "This Love of Mine", "There are Such Things", "Oh, Look at Me Now", "Stardust", and "Put Your Dreams Away for Another Day", which later became Sinatra's theme song. Much of the success of the Pied Pipers was due to their distinctive modern harmony and phrasing, which prompted Paul Weston to state that, "The Pied Pipers were truly ahead of their time."

After a considerable break with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, the Pied Pipers have returned to the fold and together they are providing audiences with music that delights and a style we can no longer get anywhere else.
