| Celebrating its
sixteenth season in 2007-08, the Carolina Chamber Symphony Players (CCSP), also
known as the Carolina Chamber Symphony, was founded in 1992 by Robert Franz and
a group of fellow musicians from the North
Carolina School
of the Arts. Franz served as artistic director and conductor of the orchestra
for ten years.
Over the past
fifteen seasons, the orchestra and its chamber ensembles have delighted
audiences with their artistry and excellence; commissioned and premiered new
works by some of this country's most gifted composers; featured guest artists
of national renown in thrilling performances of chamber music repertoire; and
provided exciting music education experiences for students of all ages.
CCS performs repertoire spanning four centuries, from the Baroque masters to
works by living composers. Committed to performing music by American composers,
CCSP premiered eight new works in its first thirteen seasons. Works performed
during recent seasons range from the world premiere of Lawrence Dillon's
"Revenant," a horn concerto written for and premiered by soloist
David Jolley, as well as 2007 "Reynolda Reflections" concert
featuring chamber works by NC resident composers Robert Ward, Kenneth Frazelle
and Dan Locklair.
Since Mr. Franz's departure in 2002, the orchestra has engaged a series of
distinguished guest conductors, including Kate Tamarkin, Alfred Sturgis, Robert Chumbley and David Wiley.
